If you’re a woman or man, chances are you use some sort of hair removal method, be it a razor, laser technology, tweezing, or waxing.
Let’s take a second to explore each:
- A razor is an effective method of removing hair, but its effects are short-lived compared to other techniques—hair grows back within a few days, the treatment area becomes dark in some cases, and the area may become irritated and riddled with hair bumps.
- Laser technology is perhaps the most effective removal method, but it is costly—averaging $250 per session—and requires multiple sessions. That said, hair can be removed, with many women only needing touch-ups every six months to a year.
- Tweezing can be a pain, as it requires you to tediously pull each hair from the follicle. Attempting this method on a small area like the eyebrows is doable, but tweezing a large patch can be very time-consuming. This is why this method it is often coupled with laser technology, waxing, and using a razor—it is more of a touch-up.
- Waxing is also very effective. Women who get waxed contend the benefits are: smoother skin, finer hair over time, fewer sessions in the long run, no pigment changes in the treatment area (not dark or shadowed), less irritation, and results last for several weeks to a month depending on the treatment area. Treatments are also affordable, averaging about $15 to $75 depending on the region the salon is located and the area being waxed. Waxing essentially is the middle-ground between laser technology and the good ole razor.

How Does Waxing Work?
The client is brought into a private room, if a treatment area other than the face. If the face, the client will be placed in a reclined chair. In the private room, the client is asked to expose the treatment area then lie down on a flat, cushioned table. Regardless of whether the client is in a reclined chair or on a table, the treatment area is cleaned and dusted with powder (usually baby powder usually to remove any potential moisture and to allow the wax to adhere better to the skin. The technician then dips a clean application stick in the hot wax. They will let the wax cool slightly on the stick so it can be applied to the skin comfortably. While it still warm, using the applicator stick the wax is spread over the treatment site. A fabric strip is then quickly placed on the wax and the technician applies pressure to ensure adhesion of the wax to the skin. The wax must be close to the skin so that when the strip is quickly pulled away from the skin, the hair is pulled from the follicle. Depending on the size of the treatment area, multiple strips may be used in one session.
After the stripping is complete, either tea tree oil or rubbing alcohol is placed on a cotton ball and rubbed over the area to calm the skin and prevent irritation.
